Volex
Our story is one of industrial heritage, perseverance and constant evolution and change. The business, which focused on the manufacture of electrical products, was originally established in Gorton, a suburb of Manchester in the northwest of England, by Meyer Hart Goldstone and James Henry Ward around 1892. Volex was not formally incorporated until 1919, when it was registered at Companies House under the name "Ward & & Goldstone Ltd". That year it made a trading profit of £23,000 and had net assets of £87,000. By then it had expanded its operations to include factories in Manchester, Salford and Lancashire, and had established factories in former factories. The company remained a family business for much of the 20th century, particularly during the days of Sampson "Mr Sam" Goldstone (who came across as well-liked but also authoritarian). It became a leading manufacturer and employer in the region.
